3. I have however to point out that M. March had expressed a wish for leave to retire and not, as implied, for leave of absence from the Colony.
As I explained in my despatch no. 39 of the 18th of March and in my telegram of 25th January last, informing M. March that he would be relieved at the end of March, the approval of his resignation was desired about the end of March, since the only desire he had expressed was for leave to retire.
The average salary for the last 3 years in that Colony is £880.11.13. The pension in respect of M. March's retirement will count from the date of his leaving, and as soon as I learn that date, I shall address a despatch to the Gov. of Mauritius, requesting him to move the Council to vote a pension to M. March from that date, at the rate applicable in respect of his 30 complete years of service in that Colony.
